Ms Mary King’s Miramichi Valley High School English 111 students recently stepped back into the past and visited commemorative sites established in the Miramichi East community, but the tour was not just one of visiting a place. Students brought the spirits of writers, poets and historians to life by reading their words in the places they were buried, the places they spoke, and the places they frequented. Poets Michael Whalen and E. Pauline Johnson, writers R. M. Hickey and Valerie Sherrard, and historical information about Joseph Cunard and his brothers may be separated in the curriculum by grade and subject area, but were united in two hours of reflection, song, performance and choral readings. The Grade One students from Mrs. Colleen Kane and Mrs. Heather Mutch's classes have been engaged in Literature Circles! The students read from books and poetry selections that followed the theme of Spring and Animals in Spring. Tuesday, April 30, the students presented their selections through a variety of means: poetry, music, drama, art and choral reading. “It is exciting to see Primary students work through the roles and concepts associated with Literature Circles, with such success and obvious enjoyment!", stated District Enrichment Co-ordinator Mrs. Charlotte Loggie. On Monday May 6th, students, teachers and parents of Saint Andrews Elementary School had the opportunity to enjoy a sing-along with the Canadian Commander of the International Space Station, Chris Hadfield, who played his guitar and sang from space along with earth-bound Ed Robertson of the Canadian group “Barenaked Ladies” ! This high tech. and high flying event was a CBC production shared with other schools all across Canada, all in recognition of Music Monday! This “out of the world experience” was just one element of the school’s assembly reflecting the importance of music education. The remainder of the assembly featured performances by students of dance and music numbers performed under “black light” which created a good deal of amusement and novelty. The Miramichi Kinsmen and Anglophone North School District are pleased to accept film entries for the Third Annual Kin Film Festival. All students in ASD-N are invited to participate. Students may submit films in one or both of the two categories. The first category is the Kin Category. Films in this category will address the theme “Doing the Right Thing”. The second category is the Open Category. Films of any genre or subject matter can be submitted to this category. The top films selected in each category will be screened. Also this year, Director Michel Guitar from the NB film Co-op will be offering a training session at Miramichi Valley High School before the screening of the films. All films will be screened Sunday May 26th, 2013 at 6:00pm at our new location Miramichi Valley High school. Cash prizes of $250, $150 and $100 will be awarded for the winners in each category. A number of ASD-N students from Bonar Law Memorial School had an opportunity last month to experience democracy’s “front line”. They were taken on as poll workers for a provincial by-election held in Kent County.
