The District 16 Education Council honored Superintendent Laurie Keoughan at a retirement dinner on November 16th at the Miramichi Curling Club. Mr. Keoughan will be retiring at the end of December after contributing 35 years to the education system.
On November 10, 2011 the Miramichi Highland Society donated $12 409.85 to School District 16 to be used for Assistive Technology in the classroom. Some months ago Dawn MacDonald, an Educational Assistant at Ian Baillie Primary School, realized that a number of students in her school could benefit from Assistive Technology. After several months and several meetings, with the Highland Society and School District 16’s Student Service Team, a plan was developed that would identify students who would benefit from this program from across the district.
Bob Gillis, District 16 Technology Consultant, was honoured Saturday evening in Fredericton by being presented with the Minister’s Excellence in Teaching Award by Education Minister Jody Carr.
The District 16 Sports Stacking championship was held on Wed. Novemeber 16th at MVHS. Nine district schools were represented by 49 school champs from kindergarten to grade 8. Participating schools were Napan, Tabusintac, Gretna Green, Harkins E.S., Croft, Saint Andrew's, Millerton, Eel Ground and Burnt Church. Winnners were: Kindergarten- Emily- Saint Andrew's, Grade 1- Morgan– Harkins E. S., Grade 2 - Carter- Saint Andrew's, Grade 3- Cole- Saint Andrew's, Grade 4- Gerhig- Croft, Grade 5- Hannah- Millerton, Grade 6- Angel- Eel Ground, Grade 7 - James- Millerton, Grade 8-Megan-Tabusintac.
This week, November 13th – 19th , is National Bullying Awareness Week. Various activities have been scheduled in schools throughout the district, culminating in Blue Friday when everyone is asked to wear blue in support of the week and as a sign of peace. Throughout District 16 schools have taken the time this past week to remember those who sacrificed so much in wartime conflict and peace keeping. Ceremonies were held in all the schools and included choral performances, poetry recitals, wreath laying and the observance of a minute’s silence. Local veterans were invited as special guests of honour and as participants brought a real sense of meaning to all the students . Once again the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB) in association with NBCC Miramichi, Sunny Corner Enterprises and the Historic Water Street Business District have made a generous contribution to the District 16 School Healthy Kids Breakfast Program. Funds raised through the annual APEGNB Pumpkin Fling, held this year on September 24 at Waterford Green in Miramichi Chatham amounted to $2059. It is estimated that more than $30,000 has been raised by the community for the program in the past 20 years."It is a very worthwhile program.
The New Brunswick Physical Education Society recognized two district 16 educators for their outstanding contribution to school children. Rob Woodburn who teaches at Bonar Law Memorial School in Rexton received the NBPES Teacher of the Year Award for School District 16. Edison Pinder, Physical Education mentor for the district, received the NBPES Career Award for his innovative and visionary leadership over many years. The awards were presented at the NBPES Remember When Conference in Riverview, New Brunswick, October 21st.
This is the slogan that was put into practice on Monday October 24th by many schools in District 16 to mark School Library Day which was being observed across Canada. The D.E.A.R. project was held to highlight the importance of literacy and the role that school libraries have in its development. In this “electronic age ” libraries play an increasingly important role in helping students determine how and where to find quality reading material and accurate well balanced information.
The 26th Annual Provincial Leadership Conference – 21st Century Leaders, organized by NBASAA (New Brunswick Association of Student Activity Advisors) was held at the historic Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews from October 20-22, 2011. District #16 was well represented at the conference, with two Students and a Teacher Advisor attending from each of the five district high schools.
