The Lesotho Initiative committee invites the public to the annual “Chari-tea” at Terry Fox Elementary School, Bathurst, on Saturday June 1st from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Strawberry Shortcake will be served along with tea or coffee for $5.00. The Lesotho Intiative was started by educators in the former School District 15 in 2006 to promote global citizenship through the use of a curriculum based on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. To date the committee has raised $76 123.05 through events such as “ChariTea”, calendar sales and the “Salt of the Earth Artisan and Craft Fair”.
The Anglophone North School District Oratory and Spoken Word Poetry competition was held in Bathurst on Saturday April 20th. In the Oratory portion Robyn Phillips of Dalhousie Middle School placed first for middle school and Yara Ubaidat of Bathurst High School won the senior division. In the Spoken Word Poetry competition Lauren Tulloch of Superior Middle School won for her division and Olivia Hamilton of Bathurst High won the high school category. The top two finishers in each category will participate in the provincial competition at St. Thomas University, Fredericton, May 24th and 25th.
The Anglophone North School District Education Council is inviting suggestions for the name of the new school to be constructed in Tabusintac. Members of the public can submit ideas to the district naming committee who will select 3 names to submit to Education Minister Jody Carr for his consideration. The deadline is May 31st, 2013. Taking a keen interest in their own history, students from across Anglophone North School District will be sharing their research at the ASD-N Regional Heritage Fair at Superior Middle School, Bathurst, on Wednesday May 1st. This fair is one of eleven being held throughout the province through April and early May. Projects from the regional fairs will be selected to participate in the Provincial Showcase taking place at the Centre des congrès de la Péninsule Acadienne, Shippagan, NB.
The Anglophone North School District oratorical competition for French Second Language for middle and high school students was held on Wednesday the 17th at the Bathurst Education Center. There was an excellent turn-out of students and speeches in all 14 categories were very well done. Appreciation is extended to the teachers and parents who supported this initiative. First and second place winners will be offered a chance to compete in the provincial oratorical competition in Moncton on May 4, 2013. A list of categories and winners is attached.
Anglophone North School District students’ participation in the River Valley Science Fair at the University of New Brunswick on Friday April 12th reflected very well on the level of science education in the district. In the Junior Division (Middle School) eight awards were received of a possible eighteen. A Gold Level Award was earned by Dominic Stockli of Dr. Losier Middle School for his project “Caffeine and Plant Growth” and a Grand Award was won by Taylor Godin of Superior Middle School for her project “Flame On”.
Nineteen high school students from the Netherlands spent an hour at Miramichi Valley High School Monday morning, April 15th , listening to three Canadian veterans talk about their experiences in Europe during World War II, particularly in Holland. The students are in New Brunswick this week as part of an on-going exchange program that will have students from Miramichi and Bathurst return the visit in November.
Grade 8 students at Blackville School have had a chance in recent weeks to tie in some industrial arts, math, science, art and physical education in an integrated curriculum project called CreateASkate. Through support from the Blackville Valufoods store and the ArtSmarts program teacher Tim Gratton, over a three week period had the students design, measure, cut, paint and assemble their own skateboards. Darren Goodfellow of River Signs helped students with the graphic design aspects of the project.
