Last year, during the annual APEGNB Pumpkin Fling in Miramichi, schools from ASD-N were challenged to modify trebuchets and launch projectiles at a target for cash prizes. The event was such a huge success the engineers have invited us back for the 2017 Pumpkin Fling happening on September 30th at Waterford Green in Miramichi from 10am-3pm. They have also issued another STEM challenge to schools across New Brunswick: Instead of modifying trebuchets, this year, schools will build catapults that will hurl apples toward a bullseye 25-35 feet away.
Teams that are returning for their second year of competition include:
- Defending champs, The MVHS Pulamoo Pumpkin Projectiles
- Last year’s School Spirit winners, The Miramichi Rural Shark-a-pults
- And the 3rd place finishers from 2016, The JMH Tom Cats
New entries for 2017, seeking to dethrone MVHS, are:
- The Metepenagiag Warriors
- Tabusintac Tornados
- Max Aitken’s Makers
- Dr. Losier Knights
- NSER Cobras
- Millerton Bears
- King Street Kings
- Rexton Elementary
- And, traveling all the way from Moncton, Bernice MacNaughton High School
In addition to the catapult competition the engineers of APEGNB will have all of their usual attractions on site including face painting, gourd roller coasters, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin plinko, and the annual Chatham Rotary Chili Cook-off. Of course returning again in 2017, the highlight of the day, the Pumpkin Cannon which allows those in attendance to blast pumpkins toward a target in the middle of the Miramichi River. A new addition to this year’s schedule is the Autism Walk occurring at 10:30am through Downtown Chatham.
