For the first time in Anglophone North School District history, large-scale Track and Field events were held at the Middle School level for students in Grades 6-8. Approximately 500 students from 18 schools participated in Middle School Track and Field Events recently held in Miramichi and Campbellton.

Under sunny skies and beautiful weather, the first event took place on May 29th at the James M. Hill Track and featured close to 350 athletes from 11 District and 4 First Nation Schools. Students from Grades 6-8 competed in a variety of 5 Track events including the 100m, 200m, 400m open, 1500m open, and 4 x 100m relay. In addition, there were also 5 Field events including the Javelin, Shotput, Softball throw, Long Jump and High Jump.

The second District event took place at the UCT Track Oval in Campbellton on Wednesday, June 5th and even some rainy skies did not dampen the spirits of the participants. With approximately 150 athletes from Bathurst, Dalhousie and Campbellton taking part, rain forced the first two events, the long jump and high jump, to be held indoors but enthusiasm was definitely evident as students and teachers loudly cheered on the participants. As the weather cleared, it was back to the track for the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 4 x 100m races, as well as the javelin, discus and softball throw events.

Large crowds turned out to cheer on the athletes throughout the competition and lots of fun was had by all. Next up are the Grade 3-5 Elementary Track and Field Events with the Bathurst-Dalhousie-Campbellton Schools meet being held on Tuesday, June 11th at the Campbellton UCT Oval and two Miramichi/Rexton area events scheduled for June 18th and 19th at the JMH Track. Inner City Schools will participate on Tuesday, June 18th with Rural area schools competing on Wednesday, June 19th.
