Members of the Environmental Science 122/3 class at Blackville School recently had an opportunity to discuss their “carbon footprints” and sustainable development with Colin Beavan, the director of the acclaimed documentary film, No Impact Man. The film followed Colin Beavan and his family as they attempted to reduce their own carbon footprints to zero over a 12 month period while living in New York City. After the class watched the documentary Mr. Beavan agreed to discuss environmental questions with regards to his documentary via Twitter. Students were able to ask follow up questions and clarify points from the film. Some examples of the questions asked were: “Out of the practices outlined in the film, which was his family still able to follow after the documentary ended?” and “Of all the things his family gave up, besides electricity, what did they find the most difficult?” Teacher, Mr. Troy Cabel, commented that this was a great way to follow up viewing the documentary and to use technology as a means of connecting his classroom with an expert in the field.
