CRIME SCENE SCIENCE
Students in grade 8 at Dr. Losier Middle School have been taking a unique approach to learning science; studying a crime scene. Many young people today are very familiar with the approaches that forensic scientists use to solve crimes, as a number of television shows use this as their theme and story line. This helps to teach scientific thinking and techniques in a way that students quickly identify with. They need to observe, record information, do tests, pose hypotheses about what took place and then try to find facts that don’t support it, that disprove it. They are learning scientific thinking when this happens. Teacher Ms Marie Louise Squire finds her middle school students become very motivated as they struggle to solve a crime, doing so in such a way they need to work cooperatively with their classmates as they move towards a solution.
