Students at North and South Esk Regional High School were
treated to a feast on October 15th as they celebrated Mi’kmaq
History Month. The afternoon meal, preceded
by a presentation by Elder George Paul, included traditional Mi’kmaq food such
as salmon, moose and fiddlehead ferns which were followed by cake and cookies. For
photos visit Feast. In the address by “Traditional Elder” George Paul of Metepenagiag
First Nation, students were told about
some of his personal experiences in becoming aware of his culture and
traditions and how important they are to him. Mr. Paul devotes much of his time
promoting the revival of Mi’kmaq songs, chants and ceremonies and has done so for more
than 30 years. He has been recognized for his work with, among other honours
and involvements, the presentation of the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal
in 2004. During his talk Mr. Paul performed an honour song that he wrote and
later encouraged the NSER students to sing part of it with him. View Mi’kmaq Honour Song.
