Research is definitive about the importance of nutrition on learning. Breakfast, often labeled the most important meal of the day, is also the meal that research says is missed most often. Eating a good breakfast regularly has been linked to improvement in academic performance and emotional and social functioning, and is also considered a determinant of a healthy lifestyle. So the announcement on Friday, September 11, 2015 that the Boys and Girls Club/Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Miramichi were to be the lead sponsor of school breakfast programs in 20 schools in the Miramichi was very exciting news!
Several guests were on hand to hear this wonderful announcement including Minister Bill Fraser, MLA Lisa Harris, City Councilor Adam Lordon, members of the Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors and several students from area schools. The excitement in the room was palpable as Executive Director Sheree Allison announced the initiative. As a lead partner in the school breakfast rogram, the organization will provide breakfast for over 4800 students. School breakfast programs are open to all children and youth and the philosophy of the program is that no one is turned away.
Anglophone North School District is so grateful to the partnership that we have with the Boys and Girls Club. If schools are to grow children’s minds, then we also to have to ensure that their brains are fed. This partnership will allow schools to focus the monies they have traditionally collected for breakfast programs on other initiatives that can support children and youth. They say “ It takes a village” and the Miramichi is lucky to have a great village that is so supportive.
