A Girl's Right to Education - A World Issue

Posted: December 5, 2012

A former Campbellton resident, Mayme Lefurgey, returned recently to speak to female students at Campbellton Middle School and Tide Head School. The occasion was the first United Nations declared International Day of the Girl Child, held on October 11, 2012. Ms LeFurgey recently completed a Master’s Degree in gender and peace studies at the U.N.-mandated University for Peace based in Costa Rica. She has worked as a gender specialist for the government of Malawi and is presently studying at the UNESCO-Chair for Peace Studies in Innsbruck, Austria. She spoke to the students of the imbalance in the rights of girls and women, particularly in education, in many developing countries. The International Day of the Girl Child was created by the U.N. to draw attention to the child brides in many counties and to stress the importance of education as a strategy to protect girls. A press release about Ms Lefurgey’s visit is attached.
