Mango Fun Run - July 2009This year’s District 16 involvement with MANGO’s “Go for 42” initiative was officially launched on Monday, May 3, 2010 at St. Andrews Elementary School. After a warm up session in the school gym, a walk through England’s Hollow in a gentle rain followed. The approximately 275 participants included students and staff of St. Andrews School as well as parents, grandparents of students and community partners.   “Go for 42” is an initiative whereby students throughout NB Health Zone 7 walk or run to accumulate 40 kms over a 5 week period between May 10th and June 11th. Students receive incentives along the way as they complete various milestones. On July 4th, 2010, the initiative concludes with the Mango Kids Fun Run, a distance of 2 kilometers, completing the Marathon run distance of 42 km.     The Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity released last week indicated that  no provinces or territory currently meets  the guideline of 90 minutes of daily activity and  New Brunswick had the lowest percentage with  only 7% meeting the recommended guideline. By encouraging students to participate in “Go for 42” we are helping Children & Youth meet the recommended activity target. Letters for parents and registration forms for the Mango Kids Fun Run will be sent home with students soon. This event is made possible with the support of community partners including; District 16, Healthy Learners in School Program, Dept. of Wellness, Culture and Sport, Shopper’s Drug Mart, Sobeys, Rock n Run, City of Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation, City of Miramichi Police, Newcastle Recreation and Leisure, and Irving.   For more information on “Go for 42” and for the registration form for the Mango Kid’s Fun Run on July 4th, see the attached pdf document.   The Mango Kids Fun Run is held in conjunction with the Rock n Run.
