March, was just the start for Mrs. Hache’s grade 2 class at Ian Bailie Primary School in Miramichi. The idea of Nutrition Month is of course intended to encourage healthy food choices all year long. Below is an example of just how such a promotion can take effect. “On April 14th, Mrs. Hache’s grade 2 class had a special ‘picnic’ in class. For the month of March, the students learned about healthy eating as part of Nutrition Month and social studies “You and Your World”. The term ‘picnic’ for eating healthy snacks of fruit and vegetables came from Mrs. Hache’s experience with her own children to establish healthy eating habits. She would have a picnic with her little ones when they were small outside and it gradually just became a term her children used when they wanted a plate of fruit and vegetables for a bed snack. She explained to her students that her boys today still refer to a plate of fruit and vegetables as a ‘picnic snack’. The students then requested that they too have the opportunity to have a ‘picnic snack’ in the classroom. The students devoured everything from peppers, celery, strawberries, oranges, apples, cucumbers and cheese. It was definitely a huge success.” For photos visit ‘Picnic Snack’.
