It would be an understatement to say that Wednesday, April 11, 2012, was just a normal school day for the staff and students at Nelson Rural. Many would be treated to a day they would not soon forget with a special visit from NFL Superstar and New England Patriots Tight End Rob Gronkowski. The appearance of Gronkowski was made possible thanks to Nelson Rural student Alex Allain, who was one of four national winners in the NFL Canada: Take a Player to School Program.Gronkowski arrived at the school shortly after 9am, accompanied by the Allain family, and George Dudas, Director of Marketing Services for NFL Canada. As Gronkowski entered the school, chants of “Go Pats Go” echoed throughout the building from the hundreds of students who lined the hallways decked out in Patriots gear. Gronkowski took the time to pose for a few pictures before making his way through the school to greet his many fans.Students then made their way into the gymnasium to participate in an assembly with Gronkowski. Mayor Gerry Cormier and city representative Jeff MacTavish welcomed Gronkowski to the area and presented him with a #87 City of Miramichi jersey. As Gronkowski addressed the student body he spoke about the importance of physical fitness, healthy eating, and staying active. He also fielded questions from the students and talked about the dangers of cyberbullying and Social Media and how technology should be used in a positive way.Following the assembly Gronkowski held a media session, and jumped in front of the green screen to host the morning announcements. He then spent the remainder of the morning promoting the NFL’s “Play 60” program supporting physical education in schools for at least 60 minutes a day. Gronkowski took part in demonstrating activities at five different stations throughout the gym, tossed footballs around with the Grade 8 students, and even tried his hand at archery. The always smiling Gronkowski proved to be a very personable and pleasant individual as he took the time to pose for many pictures and signed numerous autographs for those in attendance. As Gronkowski left the building, one thing can be assured and that is when the next NFL season starts up number 87 of the Patriots will have a new group of young fans from Nelson Rural School cheering him on.
