Grade 7 students at Nelson Rural School are enjoying an opportunity to connect with the past in a personal and meaningful way. Using a website called HistoryPin students have been making use of old photographs from the community and comparing them to present day photographs and locations on Google Map’s “Streetview” feature. The process of finding and locating the images involves research through family photo albums, archived material and interviews with people in the community who have lived through some of the history. This provides students with a personal understanding of the heritage of the Nelson-Miramichi area. They are learning the story behind the photos. In communicating these stories through written work, public presentations and on-line publishing the young historians are developing their language arts skills and integrating them into their social studies work. These students are the first in Canada to make use of HistoryPin in such a project. Teachers Mr. Gerrit Bosma and Mr. Greg Keating are delighted by the enthusiastic response of their students to a project that encapsulates a number of features considered important to the concept of 21st Century Learning.
