Posted: October 14, 2011

A new initiative in the area of Adventure Based education brings together 12 grade 8 students from across the district to be members of the District 16 Lemur Team. One individual from each of the district schools with students in grade 8 has been selected for the program. Once a month they will spend their school day in activities for team building while learning about  knot tying, canoe paddling, climbing, belay training, outdoor cooking, packing a backpack, hiking, mountain biking, map and compass work, GPS, snowshoeing, wilderness emergency scenarios, shelter construction, spending  a night in such a shelter (a quinze), blogging  and keeping a journal.. The Lemur Team initiative has as its aim, student growth, to be accomplished by helping participants develop their leadership skills, self-esteem, practical outdoor skills, communication and decision making through exposure to the various adventure based, hands-on activities listed above. The program will conclude in the spring, with a final out trip, meant to call into practice the students’ newly acquired skills, planned by the Lemur Team members themselves.  The project is being lead by D16 Outdoor Education Co-ordinator Mr. Paul MacKinnon and D16 Physical Education Mentor Mr. Edison Pinder.
