Personal Interests in History

Posted: May 30, 2012

The 2012 District 16 Heritage Fair was held recently at the Eco Center, Miramichi West. Forty-five projects were presented and carefully reviewed by the panel of judges. Some of the student initiated projects were on topics of regional and national interest but by far the majority of the research was on local people, places and things from days gone by. While the projects were being presented students in groups, were taken on a historic walk of French Fort Cove by local historian Mr. Cyril Donahue. As well, Mr. Mark Loggie gave a presentation to the students about Canada's involvement at Vimmy Ridge in World War I. During the closing ceremonies the participants received an informative talk from Mr. Barry MacKenzie of the New Brunswick branch of the Monarchist League of Canada. Mr. MacKenzie pointed out the number of instances in our daily lives that relate to the British Monarchy one way or another and the important role the monarchy has played in our history. The project titled The Diamond Jubilee by Nora Sturgeon and Jessica Stewart from Nelson Rural School was the overall winner. These two students will attend the Provincial Showcase to be held at the Queen’s County Court House in Gagetown, NB from June 22-24. A list of all award recipients is attached below.
