A School Focuses on an Historic Island

Posted: June 19, 2011

This spring District 16 students from St. Andrew’s Elementary School became experts on nearby historic Middle Island through a school-wide enrichment project that culminated with a showcase on site on Wednesday and Thursday last week. Every student in the school  was involved in learning about the island, its past and its significance to Miramichi. Several months of planning involved the teachers contacting community interest groups, developing cluster ideas, and working to create appropriate teaching materials so that the students had the sufficient background and understanding. The entire school swung into action in April working intensively on the project with one afternoon set aside each week.  Community members and volunteers assisted with the clusters and local historian Caroline Daley added a personal connection with her extensive knowledge of Middle Island. Exhibits and artwork were researched, prepared and presented at the Ship’s Galley Restaurant during the Showcase. As well, songs and dances were rehearsed and performed in the amphitheatre. Renowned local fiddler Matilda Murdoch participated in the performance on Wednesday  evening and played her composition “The Lament for the Looshtauk” with student Lexie Despres as accompanying soloist. This enrichment project has resulted in an important and authentic relationship with Middle Island and St. Andrew’s School that will last for many years to come.
