Sportsmanship Recognized

The New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletics Association (NBIAA) recently presented four ASD-N students with the Raymond Légère Sportsmanship Award. These students were recognized for their outstanding sportsmanship throughout the school year while participating in NBIAA sports: Zachery Parker of Sugarloaf Senior High School in Campbellton, Sydney MacDonald and Jonah McGrath of Miramichi Valley High School and Brodie Theriault of Bonar Law Memorial School in Rexton. These four were amongst a total of 23 recipients representing the three classes of schools, A, AA, and AAA and 4 sports conferences, from across the province.  Sydney, Jonah and Brodie were further recognized as three of the six provincial recipients of the William S. Ritchie Award, representing AA and AAA classifications, male and female. Jonah is on the far left, Sydney on the far right and Brodie is third from the left, in the photo above.These awards are named for:Raymond Légère, was a member of the Moncton’s Wall of Fame as a sports builder. Raymond taught physical education in many schools in New Brunswick. His love for coaching was only overshadowed by his love of physical education and the values it taught young people. He was the director of physical education for years at Vanier High School and École Mathieu-Martin.William S. Ritchie, was a member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame and a past Executive Director of the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association. He served on the board of directors for Canadian School Sports Federation from 1970-82 and he was inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
