Straight Talk from a Hockey Hero

Posted: June 1, 2012

District 16 Middle School students sat still for a whole hour on a Friday morning. They were  listening to the life story of Theo Fleury,  told by the former NHL star himself at the Civic Center in Miramichi-West, June 1st. Mr. Fleury in a motivational speech outlined his path to becoming a professional hockey player and member of teams that won the Stanley Cup (Calgary Flames - 1989) and an Olympic Gold Medal (Salt Lake City – 2002). He talked about the very hard work and determination that it took and he talked about the people that helped him along the way. He also talked about the very dark and difficult side of his life that involved sexual abuse and eventually substance abuse, and how he eventually has been able to turn his life around for the past 6 ½  years. He concluded that in his life he is no longer subject to pressure from peers because the peers that may be harmful influences are not his friends. He encouraged his large audience to work hard and not quit and they will find their miracle, just as he has in recent years. The former professional hockey player was introduced by Jayden Jones of Harkins Middle School and thanked by Tristan Hallihan of Dr. Losier Middle School.  Mr. Fleury’s appearance was arranged through the Rae's Yamaha Miramichi Rivermen Midget Hockey Club, the Chatham Rotary and School District 16.
