History has been made in Anglophone North School District, as the first permanent Mi'gmaq Grand Council Flag was dedicated and raised at a provincial school at Sugarloaf Senior High School in Campbellton on September 30th.   

The flag raising was the result of many years of dedication and work, and the celebration inlcuded speeches from Superintendent Mark Donovan, Chief Darcy Gray, and SSHS Principal Michael O'Toole.  A prayer was read by Grade 6 former Mi'gmaq immersion student Kylie Wilmot-Long.  Elder Theresa Wilmot presided over the dedication and smudging.

More than 400 students, staff and community witnessed the ceremony. 

"Moving forward, ASD-N renews our commitment to answer the TRC's calls to action.  It is my hope that this first for Sugarloaf Senior High School will spread to all schools, not only in ASD-N, but eventually to all schools in New Brunswick.  There is still much work to be done but we are in this together", said ASD-N Superintendent Mark Donovan.

And Superintendent Donovan's vision takes another step forward this Friday as Rexton Elementary School permanently raises the Mi'gmaq Grand Council flag at their school as well.  This very special ceremony will mark the permanence of the flag at the two ends of Anglophone North School District.
