A Display of Middle School Science

Posted: March 30, 2012

The District 16 Middle School Science Fair was hosted by North and South Esk Regional High School on Thursday March 29. Many of the fifty participants from 9 district schools impressed the judges with the quality and sophistication of their projects and like the elementary science fair, two days earlier, the decisions about winners were not easy to make.  While the judges were deliberating the fair participants had an opportunity to experience “Race Car Physics” and Kodu programming. NSER high school teachers and students showed how the use of model racing cars can be used to understand some of the principals of physics and introduced Kodu which is a creative and instructive computer programming tool that is easy for students to use as it avoids the use of code. The science fair award winners are eligible to participate in the River Valley Science Fair at UNB Fredericton on April 19th.   The award winners are: Bio-technology, Life and Health Science: Bronze Medal: Luke MacDonald - Group Think - Miramichi Rural Silver Medal: Kathleen Dunn - Stroop Effect - NSER Gold Medal: Alex Stockli - An ELF/EMF Examination - Dr. Losier   Computing and Engineering: Bronze Medal: Treyvan Munn - L'Evaluation des Risques - Dr. Losier Silver Medal: Brett Irlam & Ben Ward - Laser Alarms using Mirrors - Nelson Rural Gold Medal: Mike Waugh & Ashlyn Moody - Automobile Sunglasses - Blackville   Earth and Environmental Sciences: Bronze Medal: Brian Allison - Which is Best? - NSER Silver Medal: Madison Matchett & Taylor Blackmore - Cristaux - Harkins Middle Gold Medal - Lyndsay Jay-Keating - Whooly Cow - Harkins Middle   Physical and Mathematical Sciences: Bronze Medal: Jenna Tozer & Skylar Young - Lemon Electricity – NSEE Silver Medal: Andrew Lanteigne & Garret Dickson - What is the best way to cool a beverage? - Nelson Rural Gold Medal: Bernie Keating & Matthew Henderson - Battery Life - NSER   To see photos visit D16 Middle School Science Fair
