Gearing up for Roots of Empathy

Posted: September 26, 2013

Preparations are in full swing for having Roots of Empathy in classrooms in New Brunswick including once again,  here in Anglophone North School District. While Key Point People coordinate families, classrooms and instructor,s another  important part is also taking place. Fifteen new instructors and 4 returning instructors from around the province are gathered at the Education Center Miramichi this week for training. When the 3 day training is completed they will then return to schools in their respective areas and deliver this evidenced based program created in 1996 by Mary Gordon. This group, led by certified trainer, Thelma Messer, a Public Health Nurse who works in the Healthy Learners in School Program in Anglophone South, includes Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, School Psychologists, a nurse,  a dietician, a Family Intervention Worker,  a Community Schools Coordinator, as well as  a bank employee who is a community volunteer.  This intense training was made possible thanks to community donations and special funding received from the Anglophone Sector of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.  For more information on the program or how you might become involved in Roots of Empathy contact Darlene MacDonald at 778-6738 or go to Roots of Empathy .
