Flouride Mouthrinse Program

Overview

A fluoride mouthrinse program is available in participating elementary schools throughout the Province. The program is delivered in partnership with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Eligibility

Elementary school children across the province may participate in the program free of charge in schools that have opted to provide this service. Parental consent is required. Parents receive a letter outlining the program. They must sign and return an approval form to their child’s school before the child is permitted to participate. Research has shown that fluoride mouthrinse programs are effective in reducing cavities by as much as 20 to 30 percent.

Description

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element. As a supplement to other good dental health habits, fluoride assists in the prevention of tooth decay. Once a week, teachers or volunteers prepare a fluoride solution at school. The students rinse with the solution for one minute and then discharge the liquid into paper cups for disposal. The entire procedure takes less than five minutes of class time per week.
