Adrienne Elfner-Hazen, an artist living in Bathurst, is working with students at Tide Head School through the Artist-in-Residency School Program. Using different kinds of media and various techniques she is teaching the young artists to capture the beauty of nature in their own works of art.
In February SMART Technologies announced the recognition of three Canadian schools with Showcase Classrooms that demonstrate “thought leadership” in education and a commitment to explore innovative learning models. Gretna Green Elementary School in Miramichi was one of those so recognized and will receive from the Calgary based company four SMART Board 800i interactive whiteboard systems, four SMART Document Cameras, SMART Response interactive response systems, SMART Audio classroom amplification system, and SMART Sync software.

The Cute Awards will be held Thursday, March 21th, 7:00 pm at James M. Hill High School.
Tide Head School is the New Brunswick Winner of the “Recycle My Cell Student Challenge!” The school sent in more cell phones per capita than any other school in the New Brunswick (120 cell phones and 10 pagers). The school will receive a $500 reward and, required to put it toward a Green Project, Principal Heather Ross plans to use it for their school vegetable garden project. Recycle My Cell is Canada’s national recycling program for mobile phones and accessories.
Blackville School was recently selected as one of twelve schools across Canada to receive funds in the 2013 Future Generation Tech Lab program. Sponsored by Future Shop, Blackville School received $15, 000 which will allow for the purchase of equipment that can be used for podcasting, video production, online publishing, photography, interviewing and writing.
The Miramichi River Tourism Association is once again offering the Atlantic Canada Adventure and Technology Camp this summer. The camp provides opportunities for participants to enhance their leadership skills, take part in team building exercises and engage in a variety of outdoor adventures. At the same time they will experience Aboriginal, Acadian, Irish and Scottish heritage as well as have a chance to develop their technology skills, take SmartBoard Training and use their creativity in a variety of ways. The Anglophone North School District Chess Championship will be held Saturday March 16th at Rexton Elementary School. The registration is at 8:30 am and games will begin at 9:00 am.
ASD-N Science Fair committee chairperson, Judson Waye, has announced the dates for this year’s school science fairs that have been planned to date. In the Miramichi area the Elementary School Science Fair will be held at Gretna Green Elementary School on March 26th. The Middle and High School Fair for the Miramichi area will be held on March 28th at James M. Hill High School. For the three schools in the Rexton area, Harcourt School and Elsipogtog School, the science fair will be held at Eleanor W. Graham Middle School on April 3rd.
Pink Shirt Day across Canada is Wednesday February 27th. Pink Shirt Day originated in Nova Scotia when two students organized the day to protest against bullying in their school. They distributed pink shirts to all of the boys to wear in empathy with a boy who was being bullied. The day has grown over the years and now we are all asked to wear pink on this day to help stop bullying. A number of schools in ASD-N are marking this day, on or about Feb. 27th. Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JMC) is presenting a concert Tuesday, February 19th at 7:30
p.m. to which school students are very welcome to attend with free admission.
JMC is a national not-for-profit organization that promotes opportunities for
young Canadians to perform and enjoy classical music. The local branch, JMC –
Miramichi, hosts four concerts a season performed by up-and-coming young
professional musicians who tour Eastern Canada. The performances, held at Carrefour Beausoleil, are always delightful.
