Saint Andrew's Elementary School held the official opening for its new soccer field on Monday Sept. 21st. There was a great deal of enthusiasm shown by the school children and the appreciation for the new facility was obvious.  The setting for the soccer field is very picturesque, being located on the bank of the Miramichi River. Representatives  from the sponsoring organizations; S’cool Life Fund ®, the Royal Bank (Chatham) , and the Retired Teachers’ Community Project Fund, attended the ceremony. The Chatham Lioness Club also supported the project as did many members of the St.

School District 16 will be hosting 21 students and three teachers from St. Canisius School in Almelo, Netherlands from October 12 – 19. This will be the first visit to Canada for the 21 Dutch students who will be guests of Miramichi Valley and James M. Hill High School students. The exchange, which will have District 16 students visiting the Netherlands during their March Break, is part of an ongoing collaboration between District 16 and St. Canisius that was begun six years ago.

A dinner was held recently to welcome 35 International Students to NB School District 16 at the Rodd Miramichi River Hotel. Representatives from various agencies and supporting governing bodies were on hand to offer a warm welcome to the secondary school students from Germany, Slovakia, Mexico, Colombia,  Korea and China.

On Sept 8, high schools in District 16 implemented the Boomerang Project for the second consecutive year. The program helps with the transition of grade 9 students to the high school program. This year the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) program was implemented to assist grade 6 students entering middle school. Seven schools in  District 16 participated in these two programs, the aim of which is to help new students succeed by focusing on peer mentorship and leadership.

On the last day of August District 16 educators received a well delivered and enthusiastic talk on the topic of school discipline and classroom management on their first day back for the 2009 – 2010 school year.  The guest speaker, Mr. Ronald Morrish, gave an engaging  and heart-felt delivery that emphasized the need for educators to develop expectations for student behaviour in schools, and to teach those behaviours so that students are disciplined in them. The teaching of these expectations must be accomplished early in the new term and be reinforced consistently throughout the school year.

District 16 has found a way to help students reach new heights in a challenging manner. The recent installation of a High Element Challenge Course on the grounds of Miramichi Valley High School provides a unique opportunity for students to test themselves climbing a variety of obstacles with trusty support from team members.

On Sunday July 5th 2009, 256 students from schools throughout the Miramichi region completed the last 2.2 kilometer stage of their 42 kilometer marathon started in the spring at their respective schools. Students from School  District 16 as well as others from districts 9 and 11, ran or walked through the blocked off streets of Miramichi West to the cheering of spectators and with the support of family and friends.  This annual event is promoted by MANGO with the support of local schools, to encourage the youngsters to adopt  active and healthy lifestyles.
