District 16 has released the list of finalists for the 3rd Annual Creative Use of Technology in Education (CUTE) Awards , see below. The names of the recipients of the awards in each of the 13 categories will be announced at a ceremony to be held at James M. Hill High School auditorium on Wednesday evening February 17th starting at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcomed to attend and there is no admission charge. The audience will have an opportunity before the presentation ceremony to see and hear some of the digital media created by District 16 students.
All District 16 students (and staff) are invited to dance away the winter chills and participate in “So You Think You Can Dance School District 16”. Students in all grades are being encouraged in their physical education classes to create short original dances and present them for judging with school winners competing in the district final at Miramichi Valley High School Wednesday February 17th. Students of several District 16 schools became closely involved with the recent Miramichi Rotary Pond Hockey Tournament held at French Fort Cove. The students were on the frozen pond, conducting interviews with participants, organizers and spectators, taking photographs and recording their impressions. The four participating schools were Croft Elementary, Gretna Green Elementary, Ian Baillie Primary and Millerton School. Fourteen Mexican high school exchange students have been enjoying what a Canadian winter has had to offer Miramichi over the past 10 days. And what a range of temperatures they have had to adjust to. But none-the-less their schedule has included time at host school James M. Hill High, visits to Metepenagiag First Nation, sleigh rides, tobogganing, curling, cross country and downhill skiing, school visits, watching hockey games, watching Irish dancing and a games night at the Golden Hawk Recreation Center.
With scissors and glue in hand, a dedicated group of primary teachers dove into a “Make and Take” session on Jan.12. After a CI Day presentation on phonological awareness, teachers were provided with the materials to make activities to develop and reinforce these skills with their students.

The drama club from Croft Elementary School visited the School District 16 office on December 17th to perform their latest production called The Best Christmas Pagent Ever. Although it could be called a costumeless dress rehearsal there was no lack of enthusiasm as just a few moments into the story the players warmed to their roles, gathered confidence and gave a convicing performance. The District 16 staff thoroughly enjoyed the 30 minute play that concluded with the spirited singing of two Christmas carols.
The after-school program at Eleanor W. Graham Middle School in Richibucto has received a grant of $30 000 from RBC. The after-school program has been established to give students an opportunity to try a variety of activities that include among others: sports, music and visual arts. Reducing the lunch break to 20 minutes makes room in the school's time table for the highly regarded program. Criteria for the RBC award requires the program to be structured and supervised with a focus on safety, social skills and self-esteem.
Writing reports, doing research and making presentations to classmates have long been an established ways for students to show what they have learned and to express their interests. In this era of electronic technology students have many opportunities to create and publish work in a variety of media and to have it immediately available to all through the Internet. It is also very easy for them to do the research and gather resources on any given topic.
Earlier this fall Mr. Kevin Scully, physical education teacher at Eleanor W. Graham Middle School in Richibucto, was awarded the District 16 Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award by the New Brunswick Physical Education Society.
