School District 16 held its second elementary school cross country meet of the season on Wednesday Sept. 21 at Gretna Green School. The well attended event saw hundreds of runners from grades 3 to 5 compete over a grassy one kilometer course. The weather could not have been more favourable.  Leadership from District 16 educators with very keen support from parents seemed very much appreciated by the enthusiastic young participants. There are three more meets to be held on successive Wednesdays at Blackville School, Saint Andrew’s School and French Fort Cove, all starting at 4:00 pm.

Earlier this month BellAliant Pioneer Volunteers made a generous donation to students of District 16. To mark the organization's 100th anniversary, one hundred dictionaries for grades three and four were presented to District 16 superintendent Mr. Laurie Keoughan by Debbie Whitney, President of the Miramichi Pioneers and Lois Oldfield, a Pioneer volunteer. In addition, six back packs stuffed with $50.00 worth of school supplies were given to Mr. Keoughan to be passed on to those in need.

The Miramichi Wellness Network launched the 2011-2012 wellness marketing campaign, Join the Wellness Movement at the High Elements Challenge Course at MVHS on Monday, September 12, 2011.  Miramichi In Motion community champion, Dr. Mike Dickinson dropped the first beach ball into the 7 foot high Ball Unit suspended up-side down from High Elements course. Many local dignitaries and community partners were on hand for the launch and to encourage Dr. Dickinson.

Is Your Child Entering Kindergarten in District 16 Next Year? Parents/Guardians of children entering kindergarten in NB School District 16 for the 2012/13 school year are asked to register between October 11th  and 14th 2011. Parents are reminded that kindergarten attendance in the 2012/13  school year is compulsory for children born in 2007, except if a child is born between September 1st and December 31st of that year. These children have the option of starting kindergarten the following year. Birth cerificates and proof of immunization are required at time of registration.

Once again programs called WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) and Boomerang (You get back what you put in) for Middle and High Schools were presented in District 16 schools for the first day of classes September 6th. These programs are designed to make the transition to middle and high school a positive and supported experience for those entering a new secondary school level for the first time. Activities are held periodically throughout the school year that continue to support this transition.

Not all District 16 students will begin classes Tuesday September 6th. Those entering Middle and High School grades for the first time will be treated to a purposeful and informative day as they start the 2011 – 2012 school year.

This past Tuesday District 16 educators were back in the classroom in the role of learners in a collaborative setting as they participated in their first professional development sessions for the new school year. The elaborately planned day included a panel discussion presentation by teachers and students that highlighted recent large scale, project-based, collaborative learning experiences from five of the district schools.

On August 30, 2011, School District 16 teachers will attend professional development sessions on 21st Century Learning that will focus on best practices for engaging students. The day will begin with a Student/Teacher panel discussion at the James M. Hill Theatre.  The panel discussion will be followed by divided sessions. The sessions will be organized under three strand themes: Projects, Skills and Knowledge and Collaborative Conversations.

The Go for 42 and Mango Kids Fun Run on was held on Sunday, July 3rd. Students from kindergarten to grade 8 in School Districts 16, 9 and 11 participated. A total of 260 crossed the finish line of the 2.2km run that hopefully instilled in them the joy of running and the value of physical activity. Croft Elementary School was recognized as having the largest participation with 21% of its students attending.  Many of the students on Sunday were completing the final phase of marathon challenge, to go a total of 42.2 kilometers, a challenge they had started at their schools earlier in the spring.
