History has been made in Anglophone North School District, as the first permanent Mi'gmaq Grand Council Flag was dedicated and raised at a provincial school at Sugarloaf Senior High School in Campbellton on September 30th.   

The flag raising was the result of many years of dedication and work, and the celebration inlcuded speeches from Superintendent Mark Donovan, Chief Darcy Gray, and SSHS Principal Michael O'Toole.  A prayer was read by Grade 6 former Mi'gmaq immersion student Kylie Wilmot-Long.  Elder Theresa Wilmot presided over the dedication and smudging.

On September 12th and 13th several teachers from ASDN participated in a professional learning (PL) experience in Halifax that was fully funded by CIVIX Canada.

Keagan Payne is a grade 10 student at Dalhousie Regional High School who has been busy this past month. Throughout the school year Keagan has been working on functional programming and building his culinary skills.  Keagan enjoys helping people and sharing his creations, so the team thought this would be the perfect way for him to put his skills to work and help the community at the same time. For the last three weeks he has been making and selling pizzas.  All money raised was donated to the Restigouche SPCA. The shelter staff were so pleased with his support.

Anglophone North School District Miramichi/Rexton/Harcourt area schools held their annual Turnaround Achievement Award event at the Rodd Miramichi on June 11th. 23 students along with their families and school administrators attended the event which recognizes their commitment and perseverance in turning their life around whether it be in their attitude, behavior or academic performance. This event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chatham, the Beaubear Credit Union and the Cartier Foundation.

BMX Bike Program

To the best of their knowledge, Jacquet River School is the only school in the province of New Brunswick that has a BMX bicycle program. Funded in part by community donations, they have a been able to purchase 26 BMX bikes and a storage shed to houses the bicycles and equipment. Students from kindergarten to grade 8 are able to use the bikes during recess and phys-ed class.

There were plenty of smiling faces spotted at the JMH Track on Tuesday, June 18th as approximately 600 students from Miramichi Inner City schools participated in the 2019 ASD-N Elementary Track and Field Meet for Grades 3-5. Schools participating on this day included Gretna Green, King Street Elementary, Max Aitken Academy, Miramichi Rural, Napan and Nelson Rural. Students competed in a total of 10 different events, including the 100m, 200m, 800m, 60m hurdles and 4 x 100m relays, as well as the Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin, Discus, and Softball Throw.

The Turnaround Awards Banquet for the Chaleur Area Schools in Anglophone North School District was held on May 28th at the Gowan Brae Golf Course in which six recipients were recognized. The Turnaround Achievement Awards Program is one that recognizes students from each school of the Chaleur region for their effort and commitment in turning his or her life around with respect to attitude, behaviour, academic performance, and/or personal obstacles.  Schools have traditionally recognised overachievers, the top athlete and top academics.

For the first time in Anglophone North School District history, large-scale Track and Field events were held at the Middle School level for students in Grades 6-8. Approximately 500 students from 18 schools participated in Middle School Track and Field Events recently held in Miramichi and Campbellton.
