Nelson Rural grade 7 and 8 students have been working with ArtsSmarts musician and songwriter Stephen Lewis, from Fredericton NB. Over the past two months students have studied and written spoken word poetry/hip hop songs to accompany the musical compositions they created using keyboards and loop pedals. This WCAMS episode was recorded during the students final showcase of their written word, musical compositions and their overall collaboration.

Saturday was an exciting day in Campbellton, as Lord Beaverbrook Elementary played host to the ASD-N District Chess Tournament for North Shore area schools. It was the first time having the District tourney take place in Campbellton and the event proved to be a great success.

Students from Grades 3-8 turned out in large numbers for hours of intense, strategic chess action. At the end of the day, top finishers were identified to represent ASD-N at the upcoming Provincial Chess Tournament taking place at Millidgeville North School in Saint John on April 13th.

Renous, New Brunswick was announced as one of the Top 4 Finalists in the bid for Kraft Hockeyville 2019 on March 16th, 2019.  Each finalist will receive a $25,000.00 prize, but the organizing committee has its sites set on the top prize of $250,000.00 in upgrades for the Tom Donovan Arena. The grand prize also includes hosting an NHL game.

Rexton Elementary School was abuzz with plenty of action on Saturday, March 16th as students from the Miramichi and Rexton area schools took part in the first of two District Chess Tournaments taking place this year. The Northern region event will be hosted at Lord Beaverbrook School in Campbellton on Saturday, March 23rd.

“This class has become so much more than just a course for me. It really became a passion of mine. It has changed my outlook on life.” This reflection came from Maggie Jardine, a grade 12 student from Miramichi Valley High School, while being interview by CBC radio about her recent experience taking a class that focused on planning, organizing, fundraising and volunteering for the New Brunswick Special Olympics Winter Games held in Miramichi from February 21st to 24th.

On Friday, February 15th, the Grade 6H class at Nelson Rural School hosted a Flag Day Ceremony for students, teachers and guests. Students presented readings to explain why we have Flag Day. Several songs celebrating Canada were performed throughout the concert in both official languages.

Anglophone North School District was notified late last evening that a book containing racist messaging was discovered at one of our elementary schools.  A variety of steps and actions have been taken since that time, and all staff have been notified.
