Students at Harkins Middle School, Miramichi, were
treated to a play performed by a cast of professional Theatre New Brunswick
Young Company First Nation actors called “The Eighth Fire”, on Wednesday April 8th. Joining them in the school’s gymnasium to watch the
presentation was New Brunswick’s Lieutenant Governor the Honourable Jocelyne
Roy-Vienneau
and her
husband, His Honour, Mr. Ronald Vienneau. The play
dealt with the conflict experienced by many First Nation youth between their modern
lifestyles and their traditional culture. The performance was well received by
Fourteen ASD-N elementary schools participated in the district’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fair on April 8th, held at Gretna Green Elementary School in Miramichi. The participants presented their projects to members of the judging team who provided feedback and asked questions, helping the young researchers defend their work and perhaps consider related avenues for further exploration. Eighty-two projects were displayed involving more than 100 students from schools in Rexton, the Miramichi area and Janeville.
Members of the public are invited to attend this event which will be held at Jacquet River School on Monday, April 20th at 6:30 pm. Come and support the students who will be vying for top honors and the opportunity to compete in the provincial French Oratorical Competition in May.

Jacquet River School (JRS) is one of several ASD-N schools presently holding its second annual “Spring Cleaning with Meaning” clothing drive in partnership with the New-Brunswick Association of Community Living (NBACL). This campaign helps bring awareness of the support provided by this agency for people with intellectual disabilities in the region and at the same time supports JRS and the other Anglophone North School District locations participating, which include Tide Head School, Janeville Elementary and the Bathurst Education Center on Munro Street. How does it work?

Last spring students at Lord Beaverbrook School (LBS) launched a community wide literacy initiative, when they became the stewards of the Little Free Library, Charter # 15809. LBS’s Little Free Library is a special “book-house” as it belongs to everyone and anyone may use it; it is a community resource and a way for students to give back to their neighbors. When the Little Library project was launched last spring, an article on the ASD-N’s website caught Anna Carpentier-Beauline attention. Ms.
Chess is
alive and well in ASD-N! Thirty-five students from K-8 participated in the
Miramichi Area Chess Tournament on Saturday, March 28th, 2015, hosted
by Rexton Elementary School. Medals were
awarded to the top three finishers at each level, and the top two finishers at
each level are moving on to the provincial tournament in April. Congratulations to all! The results are
