Two ASD-N educators were recently recognized for their professionalism
by being chosen as finalists at the awards ceremony Miramichi Women of Influence organized by the Women of Miramichi Entrepreneurial
Network (WOMEN). The event, held at the Rodd Miramichi River Hotel, recognized
Annette Hendry who is presently teaching at North and South Esk Elementary School
and Mary Jane Ward of Red Bank who is involved with First Nation education and
culture in Metepenagiag. The category in
ASD-N students attending the We Day Atlantic Canada event
last week had a very rewarding and motivating experience. Students from
Bathurst High, Superior Middle School, North and South Esk Regional, MVHS, JMH
and Nelson Rural School made up a sizable contingent. Their involvement, by
invitation only, speaks well for the awareness of global citizenship in
district schools. Global citizenship is considered by many educators to be an
important component of education for the 21st century. Pictured here

Saturday, November 30th at JMH. Drop off your items
between 9a.m-2p.m. All clothing items,
towels, linens, blankets will gladly be accepted. A portion of the proceeds are
donated back and will be used to support Literacy in our schools. For

Quite a number of students from across ASD-N
are keenly looking forward to attending a special educational event in Halifax
on Wednesday November 27th called We Day™.
Organized by Free the Children™
the event is intended to reward and motivate these students who over the
last year and longer have been very active in projects that help others in need,
locally and globally. We Day™ takes its name from the idea that participants
have been thinking less about the “wants of me” and more about the “needs of
we” and that together with others of a like mind, they can make the world a
Active TransportationAnother way to accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity each day is by using active transportation. What is active transportation? It means to walk, bike or rollerblade instead of going by car! To do this:-Put on your sneakers, strap on a backpack and walk all, or part of the way to school.-Think twice before asking for a drive. Could you walk or use your bike instead?Did you know that if children walked for all trips less than one kilometer they would accumulate approximately 15 to 20 minutes of walking per trip?
Writing, one of the original “Three R’s”, was on
the minds of many at Gretna Green Elementary School in Miramichi on Thursday
morning November 21st. Nineteen Miramichi Valley High School students became
teachers of English at various elementary grade levels and delivered lessons in
creative writing. The project, developed by MVHS teacher Mrs. Krista Cabel,
with the support of staff at Gretna Green, was designed to help her high school
Writing 110 students develop their own creative writing techniques and at the
same time share them with other young minds. The opportunity gave the
International students attending Harkins Middle School and Miramichi Valley High School are taking part in the production of a short film about their stay in Miramichi. Students, using their ever improving English language skills, will in the film explain what they have enjoyed and what they expect will be their best memories when they return home. They will be highlighting their comments and adding content to the film with their own photos and film clips, having received some coaching on photography and videography techniques from project coordinator Mr.
Two ASD-N teachers received provincial honours recently. Ms Barbara Bourque, a math mentor based in the Bathurst area and Ms Melissa Esty, resource and methods teacher at North and South Esk Elementary School in Sunny Corner, received the Minister’s Excellence in Teaching Award at a ceremony in Fredericton on Saturday November 16th, 2013.
Students and teachers in the Bathurst area are preparing for a gala concert, “HOME” , to be held at the Gwendolyn Kent Auditorium, Bathurst High School, on November 30th and December 1st. Many area performers will be presenting an evening of song and dance with proceeds going towards the Spirit of Christmas campaign and the Victorian Order of Nurses. The Spirit of Christmas campaign is a community wide project that includes area schools and provides Christmas visits and gifts for many local senior citizens.
