Active TransportationAnother way to accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity each day is by using active transportation. What is active transportation? It means to walk, bike or rollerblade instead of going by car! To do this:-Put on your sneakers, strap on a backpack and walk all, or part of the way to school.-Think twice before asking for a drive. Could you walk or use your bike instead?Did you know that if children walked for all trips less than one kilometer they would accumulate approximately 15 to 20 minutes of walking per trip?
Writing, one of the original “Three R’s”, was on
the minds of many at Gretna Green Elementary School in Miramichi on Thursday
morning November 21st. Nineteen Miramichi Valley High School students became
teachers of English at various elementary grade levels and delivered lessons in
creative writing. The project, developed by MVHS teacher Mrs. Krista Cabel,
with the support of staff at Gretna Green, was designed to help her high school
Writing 110 students develop their own creative writing techniques and at the
same time share them with other young minds. The opportunity gave the
International students attending Harkins Middle School and Miramichi Valley High School are taking part in the production of a short film about their stay in Miramichi. Students, using their ever improving English language skills, will in the film explain what they have enjoyed and what they expect will be their best memories when they return home. They will be highlighting their comments and adding content to the film with their own photos and film clips, having received some coaching on photography and videography techniques from project coordinator Mr.
Two ASD-N teachers received provincial honours recently. Ms Barbara Bourque, a math mentor based in the Bathurst area and Ms Melissa Esty, resource and methods teacher at North and South Esk Elementary School in Sunny Corner, received the Minister’s Excellence in Teaching Award at a ceremony in Fredericton on Saturday November 16th, 2013.
Students and teachers in the Bathurst area are preparing for a gala concert, “HOME” , to be held at the Gwendolyn Kent Auditorium, Bathurst High School, on November 30th and December 1st. Many area performers will be presenting an evening of song and dance with proceeds going towards the Spirit of Christmas campaign and the Victorian Order of Nurses. The Spirit of Christmas campaign is a community wide project that includes area schools and provides Christmas visits and gifts for many local senior citizens. Schools across ASD-N are participating in programs and activities as part of the Anti-Bullying campaign being held across Canada this week. Campbellton Middle School hosted a “kick-off” event first thing Monday morning that was streamed live via the internet to schools across the province. The event featured addresses by NB Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Marie-Claude Blais and ASD-N Superintendent Elizabeth Stymiest, amongst others. Energy Drinks and Sport Drinks Energy drinks (ie. Redbull, Monster, Red Rain, Rockstar, Amp, Five hour Energy) claim to give you more energy and make you more alert. However, they are full of caffeine and sugar! They also contain other substances, such as guarana, that has 2-3 times more caffeine than a coffee bean. The amount of caffeine in most energy drinks exceeds the recommendations for children. Caffeine can cause nervousness, anxiety, stomach/intestinal upset, rapid heart rate, trouble sleeping, headache, fatigue, irritability and poor concentration.
The Starfish Award program has recently been initiated in ASD-N. District employees are encouraged to nominate fellow employees who they feel are making an exceptional diffrence, large or small, in the lives of others. The name of the program is based on the following story. An old man walked up a shore littered with thousands of starfish, beached and dying after a storm. A young man was picking them up and flinging them back into the ocean. “Why do you bother?” the old man scoffed.
