Many district school students observed Remembrance Day on Friday Nov. 9th at ceremonies held at their respective schools. Their participation was not limited to attending the hour long programs. Several weeks of effort went into choir rehearsals, preparation of audio-visual presentations and the making of decorations, providing ample time to reflect. Former members of Canada's armed forces, including WW II and Korean War veterans, attended and were made to feel welcome.
Now that Halloween has passed and
Remembrance Day is upon us, as to be expected, local retail stores are
anxiously anticipating Christmas with the hope of a rush of people passing
through their doors. Local food banks throughout the Anglophone North School
District are also getting ready for a busy time. It turns out that many school
children are aware of the needs of others in their community and will be
actively involved in collecting non-perishable food items and delivering them
to the needy, usually through local food banks. Members of the public are asked
Harkins Middle School recently enjoyed the science enrichment activities provided by Fredericton based Science East™. Two days of classroom demonstrations culminated in an evening community based event titled "ILLUMINATE", Thursday November 9th. The purpose of this showcase was to “shed light” on how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are used by professionals in the Miramichi region.
Several Anglophone North District schools arranged for their
students to collect food items for local food banks when they visited their
neighbours on Halloween. Most food bank inventories are getting quite low according
to recent media reports. The Miramichi Food Bank for instance, is presently supporting more
than 400 familes and so the organization was very grateful when 2 district
schools delivered more than 1.8 metric tonnes of non-perishable food on
November 1st. Please visit Delivering to the Food Bank
to see photos.
Recently, Campbellton Middle School held a fun evening for boys from CMS and their fathers, grandparents, or other male adult role models. Mr. Graham, our vice-principal, says that “The goal of the event was to welcome fathers, grandfathers, and father figures into the school. They play a huge role in the lives of the young males at CMS, and we don’t often get to see them, as mothers are most often involved when it comes to anything to do with their children’s education.” Some of the younger and “older” guys played basketball, others played floor hockey and some played video games.
