A Dutch teacher from Arnhem has recently completed a very special collaboration project with NB D16 teacher Pat Lange and NB D15 teacher Patrick McLaughlin and their students. Working, via technology, across the Atlantic Ocean, Canadian and Dutch students researched members of the New Brunswick North Shore Regiment who are buried in the Canadian War Cemetary at Groesbeek, Holland. The Dutch students then took a bus to Groesbeek and planted Canadian flags at each grave, along with the stories they wrote about the Canadian soldier.
Hundreds of District 16 school children will be able to share in the excitement of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics on November 27th as the Olympic Torch Relay passes through the City of Miramichi. A ceremony will take place at the James M Hill High School track involving a warm welcome for the torch, official comments from public figures and several cultural performances.
District 16 has recognized 8 teachers who recently completed the district's two year Leadership Development Program. The certificates were presented at a ceremony at the Rodd Inn and presided over by District Superintendent Laurie Keoughan and the Director of Education Richard Walsh. The recipients were Candace Curtis, Kurt Donald, Ashley Halihan, Aaron Johnston, Tracy Moody, Dean Mutch, Carrie Saunders and Colleen Underhill. Ms Moody and Mr. Johnston were absent when photos were taken.
On Friday October 9th District 16 hosted a delegation of Colombian educators who were on a tour of New Brunswick education facilities and programs. The visitors were representatives of Study Union International of Bogata and Colombian school administrators. They were familiarizing themselves with local educational opportunities with the view to arranging for Colombian students to enroll for all or part of a school year in New Brunswick schools.
On Friday October 9, two hundred Physical Education, Health and Recreation professionals from across New Brunswick gathered at Miramichi Valley High School for a full day of professional development activities. The day included presentations from educational leaders, participation in exemplary classes and the sharing and discussion of ideas about engaging today’s students in healthy active lifestyles.
New Brunswick's Education Minister, the Honourable Roland Haché, paid a visit on Tuesday Sept. 29th to School District 16, first visiting the district office before spending time with pupils and teachers at Ian Baillie Primary School. In addition to talking individually to several educators at the school the Education Minister sat with a number of the children at their classroom tables asking questions about their lessons and interacting enthusiastically with the young learners, much to the children’s delight. The classroom visits included those of Grade 1 teacher Mrs.
In recent weeks fourteen of District 16's twenty-three schools have launched new school websites using software that enables school staff to conveniently keep their school's community informed without having to become highly trained web masters. News, coming events, notices to parents, published student work and much more can be shared not just within the school but with the wider community.
A sod turning ceremony was held on Wednesday September 24th for the new Eleanor W. Graham Middle School in Rexton, New Brunswick. Taking part in the ceremony were: NB Premier, Shawn Graham; NB Minister of Supply and Services, Ed Doherty; Mayor of Rexton, David Hanson; Rob MacPherson, President, Scotia Learning Centres Inc., the projects private partner; and EWG School Principal, Danny Scully. Saint Andrew's Elementary School held the official opening for its new soccer field on Monday Sept. 21st. There was a great deal of enthusiasm shown by the school children and the appreciation for the new facility was obvious. The setting for the soccer field is very picturesque, being located on the bank of the Miramichi River. Representatives from the sponsoring organizations; S’cool Life Fund ®, the Royal Bank (Chatham) , and the Retired Teachers’ Community Project Fund, attended the ceremony. The Chatham Lioness Club also supported the project as did many members of the St.
School District 16 will be hosting 21 students and three teachers from St. Canisius School in Almelo, Netherlands from October 12 – 19. This will be the first visit to Canada for the 21 Dutch students who will be guests of Miramichi Valley and James M. Hill High School students. The exchange, which will have District 16 students visiting the Netherlands during their March Break, is part of an ongoing collaboration between District 16 and St. Canisius that was begun six years ago.
