Bullying Prevention Week is planned for the week of November 17th through 21st and is being held in conjunction with Child Rights Education Week. Preceding this week of promoting the rights of the child and efforts against bullying is the International Day for Tolerance ,  Sunday November 16th.  Many schools in ASD-N will be conducting various activities through the week , striving to meet the objectives  of this important international campaign. Miramichi Valley High School history teacher Brandon Savage spoke at the Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the Civic Centre, Newcastle-Miramichi, on November 11th. In his address to the more than 2000 in attendance he emphasized the importance of remembering and the need to ensure that young people today understand. Noting that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WWI, he expressed confidence that in another 100 years the act of remembrance will be as significant then as now. Mr.

Remembrance Day was observed recently in schools across ASD-N with the holding of ceremonies at student assemblies. Choirs sang commemorative songs, students made speeches and recited poetry. Colour parties made up of cadets, guides and scouts paraded into gymnasiums leading the guests of hounour, armed forces veterans, many from the school’s own community.   In addition to these ceremonies schools found other ways to show their concern and interest for those who have served and are serving to protect Canada.

Dalhousie Regional High School held their annual “Trick or Eat” food drive on October 31st.  Grade 9 students went door-to-door, in costume, collecting non-perishable food items for the Restigouche County Volunteer Action Association (RCVAA) food bank. Residents were on the look-out for students or left groceries outside their front doors.  Students collected an abundance of food items for members of the community in need. DRHS was not alone in thinking about others this past Halloween as a number of schools in ASD-N held similar campaigns in support of local food banks.

The Belledune Learning Centre held its first “Fallowe’en Fun Day” recently supported by volunteers from the nearby Jacquet River School. The Learning Center, operated by Collège communautaire New Brunswick’s Campbellton campus, offers upgrading courses in several academic subjects such as math, English language and biology. The seven students from Jacquet River school were there to organize games, serve hot dogs and chili; and decorate cookies. Well deserved recognition has been given to Grade 12 student Dane Williamson of Sugarloaf Senior High for his artistic ability. One of his paintings, “Windchaser”, has been selected for the cover of the Autism Awareness Centre Inc. 2015-2016 resource catalogue. A short biographic description of Dane can be found at the bottom of page 2 of the catalogue.

On October 24th the Campbellton Rotary Club held mock polio clinics at both Lord Beaverbrook School and Tide Head School. Rotary members used purple ink on students’ pinkie fingers as part of a polio awareness campaign. The purple ink represented a topical dye called gentian violet which is used in developing countries by Rotary International to show which children have received polio vaccinations. Painting local students’ fingers purple symbolized the children around the world who are being inoculated against the disease.

The first two episodes of School Buzz on Rogers TV will premiere today at 5PM on Miramichi Cable 10. The show will re-air Wednesday at 5:30PM and Thursday at 9PM. Each episode of School Buzz will highlight stories, projects and special events happening in Anglophone North School District. “The Kitchen Door” breakfast program at Bathurst  High School recently received a generous donation from Sobeys grocery store.  This program, open to all students at the school, makes available a free breakfast each morning consisting of toast, bagels, peanut butter, jam and pure juices thus helping prepare the learners for the school day ahead.
