An ASD-N educator, Ms Heather Smith, has been elected
President-designate of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF), an organization
representing approximately 200 000 teachers across Canada. Ms Smith is principal of Janeville Elementary
School, has taught for 32 years and is a Past-president of the New Brunswick
Teachers’ Association. Her proud colleagues in ASD-N wish her well as she
starts her 2 year term in 2015.

On Sunday
June 22, the annual Mango Go for 42 Challenge had its wrap up event on the
streets of Miramichi West. Three hundred and eighty-six area elementary school
students travelled 2.2 kilometers on foot completing a total of 42.2
kilometers, accumulated over the last month - completing a Marathon. The event
was held in conjunction with the annual Rock 'n Run road race and was supported
by MANGO and ASD-N and involved elementary schools in the Miramichi area. Based

Monday, June 16, 2014 babies who participated this year in the Roots of Empathy
program were honored at the Beaverbrook Kincenter. Twenty three of the “World’s
Youngest Teachers” went into 24 classes
in the Anglophone North School
District as well as Legaceville, Baie
Ste Anne, Eel Ground, Esgenoopetitj and Elsipogotg. The babies and their
parents along with school and community supporters of the program gathered to
celebrate another successful year. During the school year students watched
their classroom baby grow and develop, learned about the baby’s feelings and
The port of Sligo, on the north-west coast of
Ireland, saw the departure of 14 ships of Irish emigrants heading for New Brunswick
following the potato famine during the mid-1800’s. Three years ago St. Andrew’s Elementary School in
Miramichi took an interest in this historical event with a school-wide project
based on Middle Island in the Miramichi River estuary, which as a quarantine station, became the final resting
place for some of these new arrivals. An historian in Sligo, becoming aware of
this project, initiated contact with the ASD-N school to invite it to link with

to Astin Brimsacle, a grade 2 student at Jacquet River School, who recently successfully
completed a literacy program with the support of ELF community volunteer Jamie
O'Rourke. The school is very proud of Astin’s accomplishment and grateful to
Mr. O’Rourke. Elementary Literacy Friends (ELF) is a
volunteer-based literacy tutoring program helping Grade 2 students who would
benefit from additional one-on-one reading activities. Many ASD-N Elementary
schools are looking for volunteers for their ELF programs for the fall of 2014.
The provincial “Speak Out”
competition was held at St. Thomas University in Fredericton on May 23rd.
Strong performances were given by all ASD-N representatives in the six
categories with two students receiving awards in Spoken Word; Jillian Esliger
of Jacquet River School, first place in the middle school division and
Olivia Hamilton of Bathurst High, second place in the high school division. For

The principal of Superior Middle School in Bathurst, Kathy Grebenc, was
recently awarded the Vince
Sunderland Memorial Award for Outstanding Educational Leadership. This award is
presented by the Department of Education to a member of the New Brunswick
Teachers’ Association who, as a school administrator, shows outstanding
leadership qualities. These leadership qualities are demonstrated in areas such
as curriculum delivery and assessment and excellent interpersonal skills as
well as in the creation of a school climate that fosters community involvement and
The Bathurst area Turnaround Achievement
Awards ceremony was held at the Atlantic Host Hotel on May 28th. Six
area students were recognized last Wednesday evening for their accomplishments in
academics and overcoming obstacles in their schooling. They were honoured with
a special dinner and were given awards and gifts. The guest speaker was Kirk
Aubie of the Bathurst Youth Centre, himself a Turnaround Achievement Award recipient
