A grade three
French Immersion student at Croft Elementary School has received national
recognition from the Canadian Legion. Madalyn Waye-Sobey’s entry in the Primary
Level black and white poster category received Honorable Mention distinction in
the most recent Remembrance Day Poster and Literary Contest. This is effectively
third place amongst all the entries from across Canada. A presentation was made
to Madalyn by the Newcastle Legion president Gerald Mullins at an assembly at
her school on Wednesday April 30th. This is only the third time that
More than fifty projects were presented by ASD-N Middle School students at the annual ASD-N Heritage Fair held at the Education Centre in Bathurst on Tuesday April 29th. Over recent months a wide variety of topics had been researched and relevant colourful and creative presentations mounted on display boards. Speeches were rehearsed and questions anticipated. During the morning of the fair a dozen judges spent two hours visiting various projects, listening to the young historians about their interest, asking questions and viewing the display boards. They came away duly impressed.
This Friday and Saturday, April 25th and 26th, Tide Head School will be receiving any used clothing that members of the
community might come across as they “spring clean” and no longer need. This project is part of a broader effort across
ASD-N. The school will be passing these
donations on to the New Brunswick Association for Community Living as part of latter’s
fund raising efforts. Tide Head School will in turn receive a portion of the

The ASD-N Regional Heritage Fair will be held in Bathurst on
Tuesday April 29th. Students from a number of district middle
schools will exhibit their work and be available to discuss their interest in
their heritage with judges and members
of the public. The event taking place at the Bathurst Education Centre at 155
Munro Street will be open for public viewing at 12:00 noon following the
judging and conclude with the awards presentation a starting at 1:00 p.m. More

The ASD-N French Oratory Competition was held at Jacquet River School on April 16th. Attached below is a list of the results for various categories. The first
and second place winners are invited to attend the provincial competition in

North and South Esk Regional High School held its 3rd
annual mini-Powwow on Tuesday April 15th as part of the school’s
cultural awareness program. The highly colourful and energetic display of many Mi'kmaq
traditions and its culture was enthusiastically received by the student
audience. Drummers and
dancers from New Brunswick and Quebec exhibited the beauty and strength of their
community through song, dance and ceremony. Sam “Derek” Barnaby from Listiguj First
Nation (Quebec) was once again the host. He introduced the
Skills
Canada NB hosted the annual Provincial
Trades Skills competitions in Miramichi on Saturday April 12. Eighty-six
students from 26 New Brunswick High Schools competed in 11 events held at
Miramichi Valley High School and James M. Hill High. The winners in each
category will represent New Brunswick in the Skills
Canada National Competitions in Toronto June 4th to 7th. Congratulations to the
ASD-N students who earned a total of 6 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. In
Carpentry, Michael Morrison of Miramichi
Pupils
from nine ASD-N elementary schools from Janeville to Blackville, participated
in the district S.T.E.M. Fair held at Gretna Green Elementary School in
Miramichi on April 10. A total of fifty-one projects were presented to judges
and the general public by the almost 100 participants. The judges were there to
hear the pupils explain their work, their interests, and to discuss their ideas
and results. This was not a competitive event, rather one where the exhibitors
had a chance to display and share their findings with others. For photos from
