Congratulations to Astin Brimsacle, a grade 2 student at Jacquet River School, who recently successfully completed a literacy program with the support of ELF community volunteer Jamie O'Rourke. The school is very proud of Astin’s accomplishment and grateful to Mr. O’Rourke.     Elementary Literacy Friends (ELF) is a volunteer-based literacy tutoring program helping Grade 2 students who would benefit from additional one-on-one reading activities. Many ASD-N Elementary schools are looking for volunteers for their ELF programs for the fall of 2014.

The provincial “Speak Out” competition was held at St. Thomas University in Fredericton on May 23rd. Strong performances were given by all ASD-N representatives in the six categories with two students receiving awards in Spoken Word; Jillian Esliger of Jacquet River School, first place in the middle school division and Olivia Hamilton of Bathurst High, second place in the high school division. The principal of Superior Middle School in Bathurst, Kathy Grebenc, was recently awarded the Vince Sunderland Memorial Award for Outstanding Educational Leadership. This award is presented by the Department of Education to a member of the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association who, as a school administrator, shows outstanding leadership qualities. The Bathurst area Turnaround Achievement Awards ceremony was held at the Atlantic Host Hotel on May 28th. Six area students were recognized last Wednesday evening for their accomplishments in academics and overcoming obstacles in their schooling. They were honoured with a special dinner and were given awards and gifts. The second of three Turnaround Achievement Awards ceremonies was held in Miramichi on May 27th at the Rodd Miramichi River Hotel. The ceremony for the Campbellton and Dalhousie area was held earlier this month and the Bathurst area ceremony is scheduled for May 28th. Twenty-six area students were recognized Tuesday evening for their accomplishment in overcoming obstacles in their lives that interfered with their progress. On May 8th, 2014 in Dalhousie Regional High School hosted an art show in conjunction with the annual DRHS variety show. The art show featured work from the 2013-2014 school year and represented all grade and ability levels. There were more than 170 pieces of work on display. The show was well attended by the public with almost 250 people in the audience. The art work was a welcome addition to the variety show, many people took their time to view all the talent DRHS has to offer.

Enterprise Greater Moncton recently awarded several ASD-N student projects recognition and support for their entrepreneurship endeavors. The Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) was held May 15th in Moncton. Awarded first place in the Innovative Idea category was Nikki Renae Arsenault of Sugarloaf Senior High School (SSHS) for her project Butter Balm. Nikki received $3000.00 and mentorship.

One hundred and twelve ASD-N students were among the more than 1200 grades 7, 8 and 9 students from across the province who recently participated in the annual New Brunswick Math Competition. Held at 5 locations throughout the province, young mathematicians from 160 schools accepted the challenge presented by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics of the University of New Brunswick and the Faculty of Science and the School of Engineering of the Université de Moncton with the sponsorship of the New Brunswick Department of Education, on Friday May 9th.
