The nominees are: Patrick Losier; Dillan MacTavish; Theresa Roy Project: I-Pod Touch School: Nelson Rural School Description: All of the photos in Dillan’s PEC booklet were digitized and uploaded to the I-Pod Touch. Personal photos and videos of school presentations have also been uploaded. Patrick, Theresa and Dillan are now exploring ways that the I-Pod Touch can be used to assist Dillan, who is non-verbal, in communicating with others. http://dt16community.nbed.nb.ca/media/content/video/2420

On Thursday February 12, 2009, students and staff across District 16 took one big bite towards healthy living through healthy eating. Food Share’s ™ program called ‘Great Big Crunch’ invited students and teachers to learn about healthy eating and local and global food systems and enjoy an apple for a snack during their mid-morning break.

School District 16 will be holding the 2009 CUTE Awards on Wednesday February 18th, 2009 at 6:30 PM at the James M. Hill Theater. Come and celebrate the innovative ways our students and teachers are using technology. Learn why District 16 is recognized as a global leader in the use of technology. Experience the excitement and discover how our students and teachers are transforming our classrooms. Again this year we will be featuring live entertainment throughout the evening, a technology display in the main lobby, tours of the digital media studio, and a few additional surprises.

Students Ashlee Arbeau and Aaron Malley took part in the taping of three hockey games at the Miramichi Rotary Pond Hockey Tournament February 6th, 2009 at French Fort Cove, Miramichi. The games involving CFB Gagetown teams were then streamed over the internet for viewing by Canadian troops in Afghanistan, some of whom participated in this tournament in 2008.

District 16 students hosted 10 visiting Chinese students for a week in January in a program called Winter Camp. These students chose to visit Canada for a chance to improve their ability to speak English and explore opportunities to eventually further their education in this country. The 10 students visiting locally were part of a larger group of students visiting New Brunswick, all of whom stayed with host families for this portion of their visit. They were in Canada for a total of 20 days.

Several elementary schools of the District 16 have made plans to participate in cross country skiing again this winter. Excursions to visit the Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club in Nelson-Miramichi are being made by many of the nearby schools. Equipment has been made available by partnerships between the ski club and schools with the financial support of the New Brunswick Department of Culture, Heritage and Sport and Sport Canada.
