The 2009 ATCON Turnaround Achievement Awards were held in District 16 at the Rodd Inn, Miramichi East on Thursday May 14th. One student from each District 16 school, the four local First Nations schools and, via digital video recordings, a school in China and one in Uganda, were recognized for having made remarkable changes in their approach to learning and their lives in general.
A Regional Heritage Fair on May 14th was a great opportunity for school students in the area to show just how important they consider their history. The fair, hosted by District 16 at Nelson Rural School, involving more that 100 young people and 75 projects, gave youthful insights into the past of Miramichi, of New Brunswick and of the Maritime Provinces. The students from grades 4 to 9 presented topics that interested them, were well researched and well exhibited to judges and members of the public.
The Premier's Awards of Excellence in Education has been awarded to District 16 educators Rick Hayward, Patrick Scully and the District 16 student services literacy team. District Award: District 16 - Rick Hayward
On Wednesday May 6th grades 4 and 5 students at Napan School were warmly welcomed to the Chatham Public Library, Miramichi East, where they went to learn about the process of writing books from Canadian children’s author Anne Renaud of Montreal. Ms Renaud spoke to the students about the research she conducted when writing three non-fiction books for children all of which where on historical Canadian events. Her books are: A Bloom of Friendship; The Story of the Canadian Tulip Festival, Island of Hope and Sorrow; The Story of Grosse Ile, and Pier 21:Stories of Near and Far.
“When children are stimulated creatively they are more engaged in the learning process.” This is the philosophy that Croft Elementary School students embraced on April 22, when Learning Through the Arts (LTTA) came to visit the classrooms of Mrs. Krista Page, Ms. Mona Rousselle, and Ms. Susan Brown. Together with professional modern dance mentor Nicole from LTTA, the teachers and students integrated drama and dance into lessons on writing, math and science.
On Thursday April 23rd, dozens of young women from School District 16 participated in the Go Girl Festival at the Golden Hawk Recreation Center, Miramichi East. The event was held to assist the 180 participants in their pursuit of basic physical skill development which in turn would help them to take on active and healthy lifestyles. In addition to a very busy day of participating in a wide variety of activities there were opportunities to learn about nutrition and lifestyle choices, provided by MANGO, Addiction Services and the Healthy Learners in School Program.
A warm welcome was extended to twelve visiting Dutch educators by District Superintendent Laurie Keoughan and District 16 staff on Sunday April 5th. The visitors spent several days in schools of Districts 15 and 16 as part of a teacher exchange program that has the aim of further developing a three year old program of educational collaboration. While in the area, in addition to classroom visits, the very busy Dutch educators spent time exploring New Brunswick’s culture and heritage through an extensive program arranged by their hosts.
