District 16 technology and physical education mentors and their associates will be busy this weekend at French Fort Cove putting on sessions for the general public in GPS use, Geo-caching and map reading. (Postponed until June 18 and 19th, 2010) Friday evening's session will center on hand held GPS receiver use while the separate full day session on Saturday is a GPS, Map and Compass Certification Workshop. Next week's second annual District 16 Elementary School Drama Festival will feature six plays performed by students from area schools. The plays, taking place at Miramichi Valley High School, will be adjudicated by a panel of judges as well as critiqued by high school thespians taking on a mentoring role. Plays by North and South Esk Elementary, Millerton School and Gretna Green Elementary will be presented on Tuesday May 25th. Plays by Croft Elementary (2) and Nelson Rural School will be performed the next day, Wednesday May 26th.
Research into a wide variety of historical topics was presented by enthusiastic District 16 students at the Heritage Fair held May 13th at the Douglastown Community Center. Many of the 60 displays exhibited dealt with topics and locations specific to the Miramichi Region and the participants were congratulated on their efforts to get to know their own history. A list of award winners is included below. The Honourable Graydon Nicholas, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick was among the visitors to see many of the displays and talk to the young historians.
The Association of Professional Engineers and Geo-scientists (APEGNB) has presented School District 16 with $1000 towards the Breakfast Programs in area schools. The money was raised during the annual Pumpkin Fling held last fall at Waterford Green, Miramichi West. Pictured during the presentation of the cheque are Mr. Laurie Keoughan, District Superintendent, Mr. Ray Ritchie, of Sunny Corner Enterprises, representing APEGNB, and Mr. Tim Dunn, D16 Director of Administration and Finance.
School District 16 will be hosting the New Brunswick Teachers Association Middle Level Council Day Friday, May 7th at James M. Hill Memorial High School. Middle Level school teachers from across the province will be attending a wide variety professional development sessions throughout the day as well as attending a keynote presentation from motivational speaker Mr. Farley Flex. Mr. Flex has a background in popular music and is a tireless worker on behalf of youth.
On Monday May 3rd St. Andrew's Elementary School joined music lovers from across Canada and participated in "Music Monday". Schools throughout the country united by singing an identical piece of music at the same time, entitled SING, SING,SING by Serena Ryder. Following this opening number music teacher Emily Comeau coordinated a program of variety for the public in the school's gym with such numbers as a class "playing the spoons" , another playing Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" on small xylophones and everyone joining in on the action filled "Unicorn Song".
Mango Fun Run - July 2009This year’s District 16 involvement with MANGO’s “Go for 42” initiative was officially launched on Monday, May 3, 2010 at St. Andrews Elementary School. After a warm up session in the school gym, a walk through England’s Hollow in a gentle rain followed. The approximately 275 participants included students and staff of St. Andrews School as well as parents, grandparents of students and community partners.
Recently Miramichi Valley High School welcomed 31 French Immersion students from School District 16 to show their skills in their second language. The participants presented amazing speeches before their friends and family. It was a difficult task for the judges to select the winners in each category. After much deliberation they selected the following winners who will be representing School District 16 in the Provincial Oratory competition at University of Moncton on May 1st. We wish them all “Bonne Chance!”
Grade 6 Early Immersion
Jantzen Losier ( Dr.Losier Middle School)
Bonar Law Memorial School (BLMS) in Rexton was host recently to the annual District 16 Oratory Competition. BLMS student Paige Hebert was awarded the honour of first place, Katie Hamilton of North and South Esk Regional High School was second and Sarah Hayward of James M. Hill placed third. Each of the five District 16 high schools was represented by two speakers who had qualified earlier at the school level. The presentations were five minutes long followed by a one minute "off the cuff" impromptu speech on a random topic.
Mr. Dee: The "Carlos" ProjectStudents at Harkins Middle School have begun a campaign to collect school supplies for Carlos and his classmates. Carlos is an 11 year old Haitian who became an orphan as a result of the recent earthquake in his country. Carlos has been very active in trying to restore his school in order for him and other Haitian children to have a chance to get an education and have a brighter future.
