The Starfish Award program has recently been initiated in ASD-N. District employees are encouraged to nominate fellow employees who they feel are making an exceptional diffrence, large or small, in the lives of others. The name of the program is based on the following story. An old man walked up a shore littered with thousands of starfish, beached and dying after a storm. A young man was picking them up and flinging them back into the ocean. “Why do you bother?” the old man scoffed.

Thirty ASD-N high school students are leaving this weekend to observe Remembrance Day in a very special manner. They will be conducting their own ceremony at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery in Holland. They have made this commemorative event very, very personal. Over the past months each student was assigned a fallen North Shore Regiment (NSR) soldier buried at the cemetery and created a eulogy which will read at the graveside in both English and Dutch. The students from Bathurst, Miramichi Valley and James M.

This week schools throughout ASD-N are recognizing  Remembrance Day , Monday November 11,with ceremonies at assemblies that include the students reciting poems, singing songs and reading speeches to remember those who sacrificed so much for Canada over the past 100 years. Wreaths will be laid at the foot of white crosses as invited armed forces veterans look on and helping students appreciate the significance of never forgetting.  To see photos of the ceremony held Thursday November 7th at Harkins Elementary School, Miramichi, visit Harkins Students Remember .

November 18th to 22nd is Anti-Bullying Week in the province of New Brunswick and in the rest of Canada. Throughout the week, ASD-N schools will be providing students with information and having classroom discussions and lessons around the topic of bullying. Each day of the week has a different theme. Monday is Healthy Relationships, Tuesday is Internet Safety, Wednesday is National Child’s Day, Thursday is Celebrating Diversity and Friday is Wave Day! Solidarity, Kindness, Empathy, Pay it Forward. “Together Let’s Take a Stand Against Bullying!” .

On November 5th ASD-N was host to five educators from Preston Middle School, Fort Collins, Colorado. The visiting teachers had the opportunity to visit Gretna Green Elementary School, Miramichi Rural School and James M. Hill High School. The purpose of their visit was to become familiar with the approaches some of our district schools are taking towards learning in the 21st Century.
