The Grade One students from Mrs. Colleen Kane and Mrs. Heather Mutch's classes have been engaged in Literature Circles!  The students read from books and poetry selections that followed the theme of Spring and Animals in Spring.  Tuesday, April 30, the students presented their selections through a variety of means:  poetry, music, drama, art and choral reading.  “It is exciting to see Primary students work through the roles and concepts associated with Literature Circles, with such success and obvious enjoyment!", stated District Enrichment Co-ordinator Mrs. Charlotte Loggie.

On Monday May 6th, students, teachers and parents of Saint Andrews Elementary School had the opportunity to enjoy a sing-along with the Canadian Commander of the International Space Station, Chris Hadfield, who played his guitar and sang from space along with earth-bound Ed Robertson of the Canadian group “Barenaked Ladies” ! This high tech. and high flying event was a CBC production shared with other schools all across Canada, all in recognition of Music Monday!  This “out of the world experience”   was just one element of the school’s assembly reflecting the importance of music education.

The Miramichi Kinsmen and Anglophone North School District are pleased to accept film entries for the Third Annual Kin Film Festival.  All students in ASD-N are invited to participate.  Students may submit films in one or both of the two categories.The first category is the Kin Category.  Films in this category will address the theme “Doing the Right Thing”.The second category is the Open Category.  Films of any genre or subject matter can be submitted to this category.The top films selected in each category will be screened.Also this year, Director Michel Guitar from the NB film Co-op will be

A number of ASD-N students from Bonar Law Memorial School had an opportunity last month to experience democracy’s “front line”. They were taken on as poll workers for a provincial by-election held in Kent County. They were joined by students from Ėcole Clement Cormier in a program supported by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Visit Student Poll Workers for more details.

The Regional Heritage Fair Showcase for Anglophone North School District, held May 1, 2013, provided a wonderful insight into the work of many young historians from all parts of the district. Many observers commented on the fine quality of the research and presentations displayed. Held in the cavernous gymnasium of Superior Middle School in Bathurst, the showcase was one of eleven being held throughout the province.  A panel of judges toured the 64 poster presentations and interviewed the presenters about their work.

The Lesotho Initiative committee invites the public to the annual “Chari-tea” at Terry Fox Elementary School, Bathurst, on Saturday June 1st from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Strawberry Shortcake will be served along with tea or coffee for $5.00. The Lesotho Intiative was started by educators in the former School District 15 in 2006 to promote global citizenship through the use of a curriculum based on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. To date the committee has raised $76 123.05 through events such as “ChariTea”, calendar sales and the “Salt of the Earth Artisan and Craft Fair”.

The Anglophone North School District Oratory and Spoken Word Poetry competition was held in Bathurst on Saturday April 20th. In the Oratory portion Robyn Phillips of  Dalhousie Middle School placed first for middle school and Yara Ubaidat of Bathurst High School won the senior division. In the Spoken Word Poetry competition Lauren Tulloch of Superior Middle School won for her division and Olivia Hamilton of Bathurst High won the high school category. The top two finishers in each category will participate in the provincial competition at St. Thomas University, Fredericton, May 24th and 25th.

The Anglophone North School District Education Council is inviting suggestions for the name of the new school to be constructed in Tabusintac.  Members of the public can submit ideas to the district naming committee who will select 3 names to submit to Education Minister Jody Carr for his consideration. Taking a keen interest in their own history, students from across Anglophone North School District will be sharing their research at the ASD-N Regional Heritage Fair at Superior Middle School, Bathurst, on Wednesday May 1st.  This fair is one of eleven being held throughout the province through April and early May. Projects from the regional fairs will be selected to participate in the Provincial Showcase taking place at the Centre des congrès de la Péninsule Acadienne, Shippagan, NB.
