Throughout District 16 schools have taken the time this past week to remember those who sacrificed so much in wartime conflict and peace keeping. Ceremonies were held in all the schools and included choral performances, poetry recitals, wreath laying and the observance of a minute’s silence. Local veterans were invited as special guests of honour and as participants brought a real sense of meaning to all the students . Once again the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB) in association with NBCC Miramichi, Sunny Corner Enterprises and the Historic Water Street Business District have made a generous contribution to the District 16 School Healthy Kids Breakfast Program. Funds raised through the annual APEGNB Pumpkin Fling, held this year on September 24 at Waterford Green in Miramichi Chatham amounted to $2059. It is estimated that more than $30,000 has been raised by the community for the program in the past 20 years."It is a very worthwhile program.
The New Brunswick Physical Education Society recognized two district 16 educators for their outstanding contribution to school children. Rob Woodburn who teaches at Bonar Law Memorial School in Rexton received the NBPES Teacher of the Year Award for School District 16. Edison Pinder, Physical Education mentor for the district, received the NBPES Career Award for his innovative and visionary leadership over many years. The awards were presented at the NBPES Remember When Conference in Riverview, New Brunswick, October 21st.
This is the slogan that was put into practice on Monday October 24th by many schools in District 16 to mark School Library Day which was being observed across Canada. The D.E.A.R. project was held to highlight the importance of literacy and the role that school libraries have in its development. In this “electronic age ” libraries play an increasingly important role in helping students determine how and where to find quality reading material and accurate well balanced information.
The 26th Annual Provincial Leadership Conference – 21st Century Leaders, organized by NBASAA (New Brunswick Association of Student Activity Advisors) was held at the historic Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews from October 20-22, 2011. District #16 was well represented at the conference, with two Students and a Teacher Advisor attending from each of the five district high schools.
Parents in School District 16 are reminded that a public consultation on the review of the entry point of early French immersion will be held at St. Andrews Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14th. Parents play a significant role in the development of their children and are encouraged to participate in this public session. District 15 and 16 are hosting seven Dutch teachers visiting from October 22 to 28. The teachers, from Arnhem and Groenlo have, been collaborating closely with District 16 teachers for the past six years. With the help of a grant from the European Education Commission they are visiting to learn more about how our districts are using Social Media in education. Four of the Dutch teachers will visit schools in District 16 Monday and Tuesday, while their three colleagues visit District 15. The Dutch teachers will be special guests at a District 16 DEC meeting at Eleanor W.
The District 16 Tech Team will be hosting the 5th Annual CUTE (Creative Use of Technology in Education) Awards at the James M. Hill High School Theatre on February 15, 2012. We eagerly anticipate a large number of entries from District 16 students and staff in the following categories:
