The Miramichi Track and Field Club will be hosting an event for children, aged 8-13, on Monday, June 22nd at the JMH track, from 6-7pm.  It's the Run, Jump, Throw (RJT) Regional meet (which is replacing the former Hershey meet).  It is open to anyone, free for those who participated in the RJT 12 Challenges, and $5 for all others. From this meet, the top 8 in each event will qualify to go to the provincial RJT meet, on July 11th in Moncton, and from there, may be selected to be on Team NB for the Atlantic RJT series.

The students of Croft Elementary School joined a number of dignitaries to officially “turn the sod”, to begin construction of the new K to 8 school in Miramichi West. All of the students present will be attending the school scheduled to open in the fall of 2017and there was a considerable excitement on display. The kindergarten students, anxious for the completion of the new facility, even showed up willing to lend a hand, hard hats and all! The crowd on hand heard comments regarding the significance of the project and what it will mean for the future of Miramichi from the dignitaries

The World’s Tiniest Teachers were celebrated on Monday, June 1st at the Miramichi Kincenter at our annual Roots of Empathy Baby Celebration. This year 18 classrooms in our area experienced the Roots of Empathy program. Over 300 children experienced first-hand the opportunity to watch their visiting babies  grow and learn while becoming more caring and compassionate citizens. Upwards of 50 elementary school students gathered recently at Croft Elementary School in Miramichi to determine who are the best spellers. Nine elementary schools participated in the ASD-N Spelling Bee for grade levels kindergarten through grade 5 on Friday May 29th. The earnest young spellers were fully engaged and made their best efforts, writing boards in hand, listening carefully and taking on the challenge of some very difficult words as the competition progressed. Andrea Bell, a grade 11 student at Miramichi Valley High School has been awarded second place nationally in the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day contest for poetry in the Senior category. In addition to the certificate recognizing her accomplishment, she received a $500.00 cash prize. Her poem, “Row by Row” is attached below.

Anglophone North School District recently presented the Celebrate the Spirit Awards to four recipients at the Parent School Support Committee (PSSC) Appreciation Dinner held in Bathurst. The award is given to recognize groups or individuals who have contributed “above and beyond” to our district and, by virtue of their mere presence in our schools, have enhanced the positive and enthusiastic culture the makes ASD-N a great place to educate children.

Four ASD-N students were recognized for their sportsmanship in high school sports by the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association at 10th Annual Sportsmanship Awards Banquet which was held Wednesday, May 13th, 2015 at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. The students who received the Raymond Légère Sportsmanship Award are Larissa Bryenton of Blackville School, Andrea Dinan of James M. Hill High School, Michael MacKay of Miramichi Valley High School and James Lee of Bonar Law Memorial School.

Congratulations to Josanna Hickey of Bathurst High School. She recently was named as one of 16 students from across Canada to win a Beaverbrook Vimy Prize. Josanna will spend two weeks in August visiting the Vimy Ridge Memorial and other historic sites in Europe sharing the experience with 15 other young Canadians.  This scholarship aims to “educate and inspire students through the historic Battle of Vimy Ridge, where Canada came of age and was then recognized on the world stage”. The ASD-N Regional Drama Festival was held at James M. Hill High School on Tuesday May 12th.  Three plays were presented in the morning. "Robin Hood" was performed by Nelson Rural School. "The Wonders of Storybook Land" was performed by Napan Elementary School.  "The Little Mermaid" was performed by Gretna Green Elementary School. After lunch workshops were held for the young actors, conducted by the Theatre Arts students of James. M. Hill. These sessions covered choreography, make-up, acting skills, set design and performance warm-up
