District 16 middle school students in the Rexton  area will be looking forward to returning to classes in September as their modern new school is very nearly finished. The new Eleanor W. Graham Middle School building in addition to 13 classrooms, includes: a cultural center, library, science lab, art room, technology center, stage, and specialized music room; features that did not exist in the former building. In addition the  EWGMS community raised $100 000 and as a result its new indoor physical activity facility is 3 times the size of the former school’s gymnasium.

Hundreds of area students enjoyed a fun and festive atmosphere on Sunday morning July 4th, and completed their Go for 42 Marathon with a two kilometer run through the streets of Newcastle-Miramichi.  The elementary school runners had run their first 40 kilometers during the final weeks of the school term. The annual event, held in conjunction with the annual Rock 'n Run road race and organized by MANGO, attracted 286 young participants all of whom received a T-shirt in recognition of their accomplishment.

Five District 16 teachers completed a year long training and received their Reading Recovery® certificates this June.  Reading Recovery® is an effective early literacy intervention designed to reduce the number of children with reading and writing difficulties. During this last week of classes District 16 is holding its annual two days of track and field events for all the grades 3 to 5 students in the elementary schools in the district.  Day 1, June 22nd, 2010, saw hundreds of energetic students from Croft, Gretna Green, Harkins, Ian Baillie, Miramichi Rural, Napan, Nelson and St. Andrews elementary schools compete. They participated in sprints, distance running, relays, hurdles, discus, javelin, softball throw and long jump.

Gretna Green Elementary School students have produced a promotional video in partnership with the New Brunswick Provincial Capital Commission which was formally unveiled at a ceremony at the school on June 17th. The message in the video encourages teachers and students in New Brunswick schools to participate in a program called Capital Encounters. This program provides travel subsidies and curriculum material to help students learn about the capital region and learn about provincial governance.

"The face of grade 9 and 10 is changing in District 16.  Research has taught us that change is needed if we are to keep students engaged and to prepare them for the workplace of the future.  The only thing we know for sure is that the workplace of the future will be different than it is today.  Discussions are ongoing as to what the next evolution of high school will look like.  One point that is emerging is that changes must occur if our students are to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

District 16 honoured twenty-eight retiring employees at a dinner held at the Rodd Miramichi on June 9th. Their contribution to the children and youth of the area was high-lighted by District Superintendent Laurie Keoughan and each was presented with a retirement gift and framed certificate of recognition for their years of service.
